James Henderson – Director

James Henderson is employed in the full time profession of managing migratory salmonids within the catchment of the River Nith, South West Scotland. He commenced working for his employers, Nith District Salmon Fishery Board, as a water bailiff in 1984 and following various promotions, currently holds the post of Fishery Director for the Nith Board. Jim holds professional qualifications from the Institute of Fisheries Management, has graduated from the Open University and is a Chartered Environmentalist. Having spent his teenage years in Southern England, Jim has enjoyed the hobby of, coarse, game and sea angling throughout his life. Jim is a keen conservationist and lives with his wife and daughter on a small holding in Mid Nithsdale, Dumfriesshire.

 

Brian Irving – Director

Brian Irving BSc (Hons) MSc PhD FLS is a conservationist and is employed as the Manager of the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Educated at the University of Lancaster and University College London he has been associated with conservation for over twenty years. He has served as Chairman for Carlisle Angling Association and River Eden and District Fisheries Association. Having travelled the world extensively and worked in various parts of the UK he now lives with his wife and two children in Carlisle where he was born.

I have lived in Carlisle all of my life and have been a very keen angler for the past 40 years. I am a full time professional Game Angling Instructor and membership secretary for The Association of Advanced Professional Game Angling Instructors (AAPGAI) as well as being a full member of the Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF)

As well as running my own fishery management consultancy, a specimen coarse fishery and writing the Cumberland News angling column, I have been coaching and guiding anglers in Cumbria and the Scottish Borders on a professional basis since 1999. As a Professional Anglers Association Registered Coach, licensed under the Angling Development Board’s fishcoach.org licensing scheme, trained in angling coaching, child protection, holding enhanced CRB Disclosure, a valid first aid certificate and appropriate insurance cover, angling has been and still is one of the great constants in my life, it has given me so much pleasure over the years. Through Borderlines I hope to introduce others to the pleasures that angling and the environment can bring.

Derek Kelly

Started fishing at the age of 6 for trout on the river Eden. Progressed to salmon and since then have fished for most species in and around the UK. Successful match fisherman in northern England / Scotland. Now based in Annan, guiding and instructing for salmon, trout and grayling.

Roger Smith

Born in Nottinghamshire I have had a keen interest in fishing since childhood. As a science graduate I was employed in the sales and marketing of educational equipment in schools and colleges and ran workshops and exhibitions. I then moved to Dumfries and Galloway in 2008 to fly fish for trout and salmon in its many rivers and lochs.

My passion is to introduce young people to the pleasures of angling and to develop their angling skills whilst also introducing them to science in an interesting outside environment by looking at fish biology, freshwater ecology and river conservation.

Qualifications include:

  • 1st4 Sport Certificate in Coaching Angling(Game) Levels 1 and 2

Glyn Freeman

Glyn has fished in Cumbria and the Borders for over thirty years and runs a variety of fly fishing courses in the UK. He is a full time fly casting instructor and guide for Cumbria Fly Fishing. Glyn is based on the river Eden where he is also a river keeper on the lower river.
